Addition: Putting Together!

Chapter 4: Adding Without Carrying

When we add, we join groups together. The secret? Always add tens with tens and ones with ones! No rushing — we understand first, then write.

Setting Up for the Show!

Riya is helping set up for the school show! 🎭

"We have 23 chairs from Room A and 14 chairs from Room B."

Milo wags his tail. "How many chairs altogether?"

Riya thinks. "I'll join the tens together, then join the ones together!"

🧠
Recall: Place Value
Tens and ones must stay in their columns

Before we add, let's see how numbers break into tens and ones.

23
2 tens + 3 ones
14
1 tens + 4 ones
📐
"Tens line up with tens. Ones line up with ones."

💡 Remember: This is just like Chapter 2! Every two-digit number has a tens place and a ones place.

1️⃣
Step 1: Join the Ones
Combine the loose ones first

23 + 14

Ones from 23
3 ones
+
Ones from 14
4 ones
=
Total Ones
? ones

💡 Rule: We only combine ones with ones — never mix them with tens!

🔟
Step 2: Join the Tens
Combine the bundles of ten

23 + 14

Tens from 23
2 tens
+
Tens from 14
1 tens
=
Total Tens
? tens

💡 Bundles stay as bundles! We count how many bundles altogether, not the individual sticks inside.

Put It All Together!
Combine tens AND ones for the answer
23

⚠️ Important: In this chapter, the ones always add up to 9 or less. Nothing moves to the next place — no carrying yet!

📝
Writing Addition
The vertical (column) way

We can write addition in a column. Tens under tens, ones under ones!

T
O
2
3
+
1
4
3
7
⚠️
"Nothing moves to the next place." (No carrying in this chapter!)

💡 Check your alignment! The ones column adds: 3 + 4 = 7. The tens column adds: 2 + 1 = 3.

↔️
Two Ways to Write
Same thinking, different look

You can write addition horizontally (across) or vertically (in columns). Both mean the same thing!

Horizontal
23 + 14 = 37
=
Vertical
  23
+ 14
────
  37

💡 Both are correct! They represent the same thinking. Use whichever helps you see the place values clearly.

🧩
Find the Missing Number
A gentle challenge!

One number is hidden! Can you figure out what it is?

25 + ? = 38

💡 Think backwards: "What do I need to add to 25 to get 38?"

Chapter 4: Addition Without Carrying
Putting Together
🌍
Addition in Real Life
Putting together is everywhere!
✏️
Counting Pencils
"Box A has 24 pencils, Box B has 15 pencils. How many altogether?"
🪑
Counting Chairs
"Row 1 has 32 chairs, Row 2 has 16 chairs. Total chairs for the event?"
👧👦
Counting Students
"Class 2A has 21 students, Class 2B has 18 students. How many together?"
📚
Counting Books
"Shelf 1 has 43 books, Shelf 2 has 25 books. Total books in the library?"

💡 Try at home: Count items in two groups and add them together. Use real objects like toys, coins, or snacks!

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Watch For
Misaligning digits: Writing 23 + 4 with the 4 under the 2 instead of under the 3. Always align ones with ones!
Adding across places: Adding 2 + 4 (mixing tens and ones) instead of keeping columns separate.
Rushing to symbols: Jumping to writing the answer before understanding the visual joining process.
Confusing formats: Not recognizing that horizontal and vertical represent the same problem.
🏠 Home Activities
Counting Collections: Combine two groups of objects (toys, coins, buttons) and count the total together.
Story Problems: Create real scenarios: "We have 23 apples and bought 15 more. How many now?"
Visual Addition: Use real bundles (rubber-banded sticks, straws) to show tens and loose items for ones.
Shopping Math: "This costs ₹32 and that costs ₹15. How much for both?" (keep sums simple)

💜 Why no carrying yet? Carrying (regrouping) is introduced in Chapter 5. This chapter builds the foundation of place value alignment. Rushing this step causes long-term confusion. Let children master the "ones with ones, tens with tens" rule first!
