Why weren't we taught the most important life skill—relationships?
We spend years learning math, history, and science—but almost no formal education on relationships. Yet relationships are the #1 predictor of happiness, health, and even longevity. Why don't we teach these skills, and what are the core competencies of relating well?
Essential relationship skills:
• COMMUNICATION: Expressing and listening effectively
• EMOTIONAL REGULATION: Managing your own emotions
• CONFLICT RESOLUTION: Fighting fair, repairing
• BOUNDARY SETTING: Knowing and stating your limits
• EMPATHY: Understanding others' perspectives
• VULNERABILITY: Taking emotional risks
• Assumption that we'll "figure it out" or learn from family
• Seen as "soft skills" (ironic—they're the hardest)
• Culturally uncomfortable to examine relationships
• Education focused on knowledge, not emotional intelligence
• Many teachers weren't taught either
The good news: relationship skills ARE learnable at any age.
• Books (Gottman, Brené Brown, attachment theory)
• Therapy (individual or couples)
• Courses and workshops
• Intentional practice
• Reflecting on relationships as a learning space
Every relationship is practice:
• Romantic partners: intimacy and conflict skills
• Friends: maintenance and vulnerability
• Family: patterns and boundaries
• Work: professional boundaries and collaboration
• Strangers: basic respect and connection
Life is the classroom.
Relationship skills are learnable—and learning them is one of the best investments you can make!
Key insight: No one was born knowing how to relate well. These are skills, not talents. The fact that you're thinking about relationships this way means you're already learning. Every interaction is practice.
