You are a Camp Counselor. A sad camper asks for your personal phone number to
stay in touch after camp. What is the right response?
๐ญ How to Think About This
Boundaries protect both you and the other person. Being "Professional" doesn't mean being mean;
it means being clear about your Role.
Choose your response:
This feels kind, but it blurs the line between "Counselor" and "Friend." You are
in a position of authority. Moving that to a private, unsupervised friendship is
risky and often forbidden.
Unprofessional.
You have violated a professional boundary. This can lead to confusion,
dependency, or accusations of misconduct.
You are right to say no. But being cold can make the camper feel rejected or
ashamed. Professionalism includes empathy.
Too Harsh.
You protected the boundary, but you damaged the relationship. You can be firm
without being mean.
This response does two things: 1. It validates the camper ("I care"). 2. It
blames the specific role ("Counselors can't"). It protects the boundary while
keeping the kindness intact.
Correct. Kind but Firm.
The Insight: A Boundary is the line where
your professional role ends. Crossing it usually creates more problems than
it solves (burnout, confusion, liability).
The Strategy: "Validate + Redirect." Validate the feeling
("It's great we connected"), then Redirect to the policy ("But we have to
follow the rules so everyone stays safe").
๐ง Why Boundaries Matter
Enmeshment
Risk: You become their sole support.
Result: Dependency & Burnout.
Empowerment
Action: Set limits.
Result: They learn to cope independently.
