Can you succeed at work without playing office politics?
Understanding workplace power dynamics
Cliques form. Credit gets stolen. Gossip spreads. Alliances matter. "I just want to do good work!" you say. But promotions go to people who NAVIGATE the system, not just perform. Can you opt out of politics? Or is that career suicide?
POLITICS = POWER DYNAMICS: Wherever people + resources + hierarchy exist = politics. Saying "I don't do politics" is like saying "I don't do gravity." You can't opt out—you can only navigate consciously or unconsciously. Conscious navigation = strategy. Unconscious = vulnerability. Choose strategy.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS: Map power (who has influence? Who decides?). Build alliances (not enemies). Manage perception (visibility matters). Credit where it's due (don't steal, but claim yours). Stay neutral in conflicts when possible. Information is currency (know what's happening). Understand informal networks (lunch groups, mentorships matter).
ETHICAL NAVIGATION: Build relationships authentically, advocate for yourself and others, collaborate for mutual benefit, maintain integrity. TOXIC POLITICS: Backstabbing, credit theft, sabotage, gossip as weapon, kissing up/kicking down. You can be politically savvy AND ethical. Navigate systems without becoming toxic.
TOXIC WORKPLACE SIGNS: Backstabbing is rewarded, competence doesn't matter (only alliances), ethical people get punished, constant drama, zero trust. At some point, navigating politics isn't worth the cost. Leave before it damages your mental health or reputation. Not all workplace cultures are saveable.
Office politics are inevitable power dynamics—you can navigate consciously or unconsciously, but you can't opt out.
Key Truths: Politics = unavoidable in human systems. Skills: map power, build alliances, manage perception, claim credit, stay informed. Ethical navigation ≠ toxic manipulation. Know when workplace is too toxic to fix—leave before damage. Success requires both competence AND political intelligence.

🌱 Everyday Scenario
Young adult frustrated: "I do great work but get passed over!" Teach: "Doing great work isn't enough—people need to KNOW you're doing it. That's not bragging; it's career management." Political intelligence = understanding systems, not being fake. It's life skills, not corruption.
