Riya's Day!

☀️ "Good morning!" Riya wakes up when the sun rises.

"What time is it?" asks Milo. 🐕

"The clock tells us!" says Riya, pointing at the clock on the wall.

All day long, the clock helps Riya know when to eat, play, study, and 🌙 sleep!

🌅
A Day Has a Rhythm
Morning → Afternoon → Evening → Night

Every day follows the same pattern. Time moves in order!

🌅 Morning 6 AM - 12 PM
☀️ Afternoon 12 PM - 5 PM
🌆 Evening 5 PM - 8 PM
🌙 Night 8 PM - 6 AM

"The sun rises in the morning, shines bright in the afternoon, sets in the evening, and hides at night. Time follows the sun!"
Before, After & Duration
What comes first? What takes longer?

Some things happen before others. Some things take longer!

What happens BEFORE going to school?

💡 Duration: Brushing teeth takes a short time. School takes a long time. Different activities take different amounts of time!

Introducing the Clock
Let's learn the parts!

A clock has numbers and hands that tell us the time!

11
Hour Hand (short, thick)
Minute Hand (long, thin)
👆
"The SHORT hand tells the HOUR. The LONG hand helps us know if it's exactly on the hour or half past!"

💡 Remember: Numbers 1-12 go around the clock. The hands move slowly — just like time passes slowly!

🕐
Reading Time — O'Clock
When the minute hand points to 12

When the long hand points to 12, we say "o'clock"!

7 o'clock

What time is it?

💡 O'Clock Rule: Long hand at 12 + Short hand at a number = That number o'clock!

🕧
Reading Time — Half Past
When the minute hand points to 6

When the long hand points to 6, we say "half past"!

Half past 4

What time is it?

💡 Half Past Rule: Long hand at 6 + Short hand BETWEEN numbers = Half past the smaller number!

📋
Match Time to Activities
What do we do at this time?

Different activities happen at different times. Match the clock to the activity!

⏰ Why Quarter Past/To Is Delayed
Foundation first: Children need to master o'clock and half past before quarter times.
Visual clarity: Quarter positions require understanding that the hour hand also moves between hours.
Curriculum pacing: All boards introduce quarter times in Class 3, not Class 2.
⚠️ Common Clock-Reading Mistakes
Confusing the hands: Children mix up hour and minute hands. Use "SHORT hand = HOUR, LONG hand = minutes" consistently.
Half past confusion: At half past 4, the hour hand is BETWEEN 4 and 5, not pointing exactly at 4.
Reading 12 as 0: Some children think 12 o'clock means "0 o'clock".
Digital-only exposure: Children who only see digital clocks struggle with analogue. Use both!
🏠 Home Clock Games
🕐 Clock announcer: Ask your child to announce the time at regular intervals throughout the day.
📋 Daily schedule: Create a picture schedule with clock times for breakfast, school, play, dinner, bedtime.
🎮 Time bingo: Draw clocks showing different times and call out times for children to match.
Set the clock: Use a toy clock or paper plate clock. Say a time and have your child set the hands.
🎬 Movie start: "The movie starts at 7 o'clock. What will the clock look like?"
Correct!
