CAD Estimators analyze architectural and engineering drawings created with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to calculate the quantities of materials, labor, and equipment required for construction or manufacturing projects. They translate design specifications into cost estimates.
A CAD estimator spends the day inside an environment-controlled office, reviewing specifications and sketches, producing orthographic views and three-dimensional CAD models, and checking dimensions while assigning material numbers. You compute formulas to confirm tolerances, confer with customers and shop staff, and revise designs to fix prototype issues. Much of the work is seated at CAD software but punctuated by team discussions and inspection-focused checks.
